Explore the Japanese art of kintsugi in this hands-on London pottery class and create a beautiful ceramic piece to take home. Kintsugi, an ancient craft, celebrates the philosophy that there is beauty in imperfection, with broken pottery mended together using gold to highlight and honour each crack.
Guided by an experienced tutor, you’ll learn about the history and meaning behind kintsugi as you work through the process of crafting your own unique piece. Whether you're looking to restore a cherished item or simply to practice this thoughtful art, you’ll first learn how to safely break pottery, creating manageable cracks to repair. Under your teacher’s guidance, you’ll use a hammer carefully, ensuring each piece retains its integrity.
The golden element of kintsugi brings a special touch to your piece. In the next stage, you’ll create a gold solution using a micro-metal mix with epoxy resin, which you’ll apply to bring the broken pieces together, forming a wonderfully imperfect piece of art.
By the end of the class, you’ll have gained new skills and a deeper appreciation for kintsugi, along with your very own handmade kintsugi artwork. Many find this process deeply calming and rewarding, with a lasting sense of accomplishment as they complete this unique project.
Please note: your finished piece is only suitable for display and not for use with food, microwaves, ovens, or dishwashers.
